West Coast Regional Coordinator

He is a veteran of the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties. He came into the movement in his hometown of Quitman just as the three civil rights workers, Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner were reported missing. He worked as a volunteer on desegregation of public facilities, voter registration/education, and eventually became Project Director of Clarke, Wayne, and Jasper counties for the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO). COFO is a group founded on the unified efforts of SNCC, CORE, SCLC, and the NAACP, to work with the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) to help unseat the two Senators from Mississippi at that time. He helped to organize most of the major marches in the South during that time, including Selma to Montgomery, the Meredith March Against Fear, from Memphis to Jackson, and the MFDP’s march on Washington D.C. to seat our delegates.

Imam Shabazz also served as an Assistant Minister in the Nation of Islam’s Temple #26, San Francisco, California.
